Among the large contingent of talented songwriters who emerged in Texas in the 1980s and 1990s, Robert Earl Keen struck an unusual balance between sensitive story-portraits and raucous barroom fun. These two song types in Keen's output were unified by a mordant sense of humor that strongly influenced the early practitioners of what would become known as alternative country music.
After moving to Memphis in the mid-1980s and establishing residency at a club named the Daily Planet, he was discovered by Keith Sykes, a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, eventually being signed to Buffets label. Snider used this as a springboard to further hone his distinctive blend of bluegrass, blues, folk-rock, and country-rock.
Austin's Bruce Robison was got his break by contributing to a number of compilations and releasing his self titled debut. Known for his solid songwriting and deep felt delivery, Robinson has relesed a number of follow-ups, most recently with The New World in '08.
